As you know, ElectronicIraq.net is home to the Direct Aid Initiative, a
grassroots relief effort that provides funds for crucial medical care
for Iraqis displaced by war and chaos.

We want to take this opportunity to share with you an exciting new
opportunity to include the work of the Direct Aid Initiative in your
holiday giving.

David Smith-Ferri, a gifted poet and longtime activist who has been
visiting Iraq since 1999, has generously offered all of the
after-printing proceeds from the new edition of his book, "Battlefield
without Borders: Iraq Poems", to benefit the medical needs of Iraqi
families through the Direct Aid Initiative.

$12 of the $14 book price goes directly to this ongoing effort.
"Battlefield without Borders" is a book of poems that grew out of
David's encounters with Iraqi people during the last eight years. Many
of the poems were written in Iraq and in Jordan, and some of them
feature people that DAI is supporting.

You can read some of David's poems and purchase the book online at
http://www.battlefieldwithoutborders.org.
Dr. Muhammad Abdel-Sattar, 36, is packing his bags as he
discusses on the phone with two colleagues the best time
to leave for the airport. In December 2006 Abdel-Sattar
sent his family to Jordan after three times receiving
threats from militants. Recently his car was shot at in
front of his house, and he has now decided to leave the
country - and his job as a leading oncologist in Baghdad.
'I love my country and would like to stay to help my
VIOLENCE, POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT FUEL RISING ALCOHOLISM
As the violence continues in Iraq, many people have been
turning to alcohol to relieve their stress, say observers.
'Violence, unemployment and poverty are the main reasons
for the increase in alcohol abuse,' said Younis Obeidi, a
psychiatrist at Ibn Rushd Hospital. 'In Iraq there are no
specialized programs for alcoholics. The two
non-governmental organizations which were helping
alcoholics closed down after receiving threats from
militants.'
TRIBES SABOTAGE KIRKUK PIPELINES
Masked men infiltrate the village of al-Milih, 75
kilometers west of Kirkuk, and approach an oil pipeline
that passes nearby. Under cover of darkness, they steal
oil from an opening they drilled into the pipeline weeks
earlier. Over a period of weeks, this scene is repeated
nightly. Despite the presence of special oil ministry
units, pipelines around Kirkuk are destroyed and hundreds
of tons of oil stolen every day by tribe members from
surrounding villages.
Electronic Iraq Amman correspondent Noah Baker Merrill
profiles an Iraqi man stuck in a Jordanian prison while he
waits for the UN to resettle him. 'Iraqis here in Jordan
describe Iraq as a prison where hope cannot enter,' writes
where they hope and pray to leave these years of living in
ESCALATION BY THE NUMBERS - BY TOM ENGELHARDT
Admittedly, a 'surge' does sound more comforting, less
aggressive, less long-lasting, and somehow less harmful
than an 'escalation,' but the fact is that we are six
months into the newest escalation of American power in
Iraq. It has deposited all-time high numbers of troops
there as well, undoubtedly, as more planes and firepower
in and around that country than at any moment since the
invasion of 2003. Naturally enough, other 'all-time
highs' of the grimmest sort follow.
GET TO WORK! - BY KATHY KELLY
Activist Kathy Kelly tells the story of two women who saw
their lives spin out of control after taking jobs with the
U.S. military. 'Some argue we're not 100% responsible for
this aftermath,' Kelly writes. 'Is it 90%? Are we 80%?
70%? What percent of Noor's blindness, of Nadra's status
as the mark of death on any family who houses her - what
percent of that can we be comfortable with?'
IRAQI CHILDREN GRANTED ACCESS TO EDUCATION, ANNOUNCES
GOVERNMENT OF JORDAN
Some 200,000 school age Iraqi children could benefit from
a recent announcement by the Government of Jordan that
they will now allow Iraqi children to enrol and attend
both public and private schools in the country. This
decision was made in response to the mounting needs of
Iraqi children, some of whom have not attended school for
years.
son, Yasir, locked inside of their two-room apartment,
alone. Suha and her son fled Iraq and came to Jordan with
no friends, family, or resources. Suha works illegally,
earning only US$140 a month, and acknowledges it's a
struggle to meet their basic needs: 'My salary barely pays
for our rent and food alone. How can I ever pay to send my
son to school?' Read more from a collection of refugee
portraits compiled by Refugees International.

:: NEWS & ANALYSIS ::

LIVING IN A DEAD CITY
Life in the violence-plagued capital city of Iraq's Diyala
province has become a struggle for day-to-day survival.
Heavy U.S military operations, sectarian death squads and
al-Qaeda militants have combined to make normal life in
Baquba, 50 km northeast of Baghdad, all but impossible.
Movement from the city to another destination is extremely
dangerous. Kidnappings have become rampant in a lawless
city where government control is only a mirage.

SHIA AND SUNNI MPS FEAR AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL
An American withdrawal from Iraq would cause bloodshed and
leave the country dominated by radical militias, Iraqi
politicians from across the parliamentary spectrum have
warned. Even Sunni Arab leaders - who in the past have
advocated an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of
foreign troops - are among those now supporting the US
troop presence and a gradual pullout over time. Many Sunni
leaders say the withdrawal should be conditional on the
progress of the Iraqi security forces.

AUTHORITIES PLAN TO ISSUE SPECIAL IDS TO BAGHDAD RESIDENTS
In a bid to reduce sectarian violence, the Iraqi
authorities have decided to issue special IDs to Baghdad
residents to make it easy to identify militants, a senior
military officer said. He did not specify when the
authorities would issue these new IDs, which would bear a
person's full name and address.

GRIM TATTOO SUBCULTURE EMERGES AMID DAILY VIOLENCE
One response to sudden and violent death which has become
commonplace in Iraq's turmoil, is the emergence of a new
subculture - the etching of tattoo identities on people
who fear becoming an unclaimed body in a packed morgue. It
is more than just another grim footnote in a nation
brimming with sad stories. It points to how deeply war and
sectarian bloodshed have transformed the way Iraqis live
today and confront the constant possibility of death.
THOUSANDS OF STORIES TO TELL
Having spent a fair amount of time in occupied Iraq, I now
find living in the United States nothing short of a
schizophrenic experience. Life in Iraq was traumatizing.
It was impossible to be there and not be affected by
apocalyptic levels of violence and suffering, unimaginable
in this country. But here's the weird thing: One long,
comfortable plane ride later and you're in Disneyland, or
so it feels on returning to the United States.

:: AID & DEVELOPMENT::

FAMILIES FLEEING VIOLENCE SET UP IMPROVISED CAMPS
Thousands of Iraqis have been setting up their own
improvised displacement camps after fleeing violence in
their home areas and being turned away from already
overcrowded formal camps. "We didn't have a choice," said
Muhammad Bilal, 43, who lives in a makeshift camp on the
outskirts of Al Hillah, the capital of Babil province in
central Iraq.

TOUGH TIMES FOR ARAB REFUGEE KIDS IN IRAQI KURDISTAN
As the violence has exploded in Iraq, the Iraqi Red
Crescent says at least 4,500 Arab families have fled to
the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, which was seen as one of
the most mono-ethnic cities in Iraqi Kurdistan. While they
are now neighbors, Arab and Kurdish children aren't
mixing.
:: ART, MUSIC & CULTURE ::

THE ART OF KAREEM RISAN AND THE URANIUM CIVILIZATION
Characterized by two coinciding histories since its first
cities were founded six thousand years ago, Iraq has
experienced both the pinnacles of world civilization and
large scale destruction at different times in its history.
Subjected to unyielding violence and ruin, Iraq currently
has the world's attention. Yet its rich cultural narrative
continues in the work of its artists. Conscious of their
complex history, contemporary Iraqi artists employ a
diverse visual culture that utilizes and projects its
multiple identities.

The Electronic Iraq Direct Aid Initiative needs your support. More
specifically, Buthaina Muhammad needs your support. She
was injured last month when a mortar, fired by an unknown
group, landed on her house and exploded, killing three
woman inside.

Buthaina survived and has been flown to Amman, Jordan for
treatment. She is in urgent need of a surgery to repair an
abdominal wound. The wound is at risk of infection. An
infection could kill her.

Her hospital treatment is costing between $700 and $1000
per day (just for the drugs and maintenance). The
operation will cost between $15,000 and $18,000.

The Direct Aid Initiative is a project of Electronic Iraq
intended to support Iraqis displaced as the result of the
You may automatically unsubscribe from this list at any time by
visiting the following URL:

<http://electronicintifada.net/cgi-bin/kebab/mail.cgi/u/eIraq/[email_name]/[email_domain]/1234/>

If the above URL is inoperable, make sure that you have copied the
this automatic unsubscribe mechanism.
