Rikers Island Correctional Facility in February 2007, and
have seen minor edits for clarity, but have otherwise been
unaltered for publication. A Series Epilogue appears at the
end, written at the time of publication.

something I have increasingly begun to consider in depth.

SONGS & LYRICS: GRAVEYARD OF FORGOTTEN SOULS

This is the closest thing you'll get to an Easter message
anytime soon. :-)

This song is an indictment of the U.S. criminal justice
system and this society's utterly misguided notion that
jails and prisons are performing any service other than
carrying on the war of the rich against poor. The song was
inspired by time I spent in the largest penal colony in
the worldâ€”Rikers Island Correctional Facility.

The title of the song comes from the name that a prisoner
called "UN" gave to Rikers during a conversation I had
with him. More information follows the lyrics.

RANDOM NEWS SHORTS

Following an uninsured hospitaI trip in late 2006/early
2007, I left New York City, and have been living in Minnesota
since February 2007. Yes, I am fine, thank you. :-)

I am still on sabbatical from working on the alternative
media projects that I had been working on since 2001. It's
been a good rest. For over a year, I have not done any
writing, interviews, or public appearances on the
Palestine issue, and have no plans to. Last time I did this
was in 1998, ten years ago.

I am only working on the Palestine issue these days
insofar as I am continuing to help select
Palestine-related NGOs build their online presence. Other
current nigelparry.net clients include teachers' support
networks, art organizations, and local organizations, as
well as progressive local businesses, and individual
artists and writers.

I will no longer be taking any photographs, commercially
or as a hobby, both due to equipment loss and a permanent
decision to focus my time and energy more on other areas
of life.

I am really looking forward to winter being over. Many
thanks to all the friends who helped me out this last
year! It made all the difference. To those who didn't,
fuck you very much.

Palestinians are reeling from a century of systematic
destruction of their way of life at every possible level.
Instead of pouring gasoline on the fire, as the
US-Israel-Fatah coalition has been doing, and instead of
debating the price of petrol, as the international
community has busied itself with throughout the entire
history of this conflict, we need to recognize that
events are fast reaching the straw breaking the camel's
back moment. Few seem to grasp that 'business as usual'
in the Middle East can only be destined to lead to more
suffering, death, and loss of hope, and that the time to
act was yesterday.

So it has been a really shitty year all round. While
working 24/7 managing Gaza news coverage in late June and
early July, Israel opened up a second front against
Lebanon, necessitating the launch of a dedicated site,
Electronic Lebanon. "Israel stole my summer" was the cry
among many activists. After two months of that it was
time to wind it down, but it's been non-stop work since
then. The Roo Dog, cheated from several weeks of long
walks during the worst of it, needed some
compensation....

Electronic Iraq.

Our award-winning websites, The Electronic Intifada,

and social creativity and resistance through which people

Unwinding after the war...

It's taken a long time, since the 24/7 reality of the summer wars in Lebanon and Gaza, to fully start to begin unwinding. Sleeping like a dog for the first month of the war, a necessity given the resources we had to launch Electronic Lebanon -- http://electronicLebanon.net -- in 4-hour shifts twice a day, interspersed by two 6-hour shifts of work, doesn't do you any favours after age thirty.

:-)

In any case, it was a good 4th Annual New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, from 14th-19th November. Sold out as usual, having to put on extra shows, people around this country and the world both really need to be exposed to this perfect antidote to the "War on Terror".

The groundbreaking New York Arab-American Comedy Festival
(NYAACF) will hold its 4th Annual Festival from November
14th–19th, 2006.

The 2006 event promises to provide entertainment that is
funny, uniquely original and politically insightful. The
Festival -- which has three components: Sketch Comedy
Nights (comedic theatre), Stand-Up Comedy Nights, and a
Short Comedic Film Night -- has served as a launch pad for
emerging talent while providing a much-anticipated forum
for the presentation of new works.

The three nights of sketch comedy will be presented for
the first time ever by the critically acclaimed and award
winning Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Executive
Artistic Director). The stand-up comedy shows will be held
at the new Gotham Comedy Club, home of Comedy Central's
Live at Gotham, and the short comedic film night will be
held at the Pioneer Theater.

Festival organizers vow that no topic is off-limits as the
theater pieces comedically tackle such topics as the
perception of Muslims in America, the Bush administration,
an infomercial on "How to be a real American" and even an
Arab Superhero.

Founded in 2003, the Arab-American actors, comics,
playwrights and filmmakers, who participate in the
Festival use comedy to dispel negative stereotypes and
foster understanding, while at the same time making people
laugh!

The NYAACF has attracted positive media coverage and
effectively dispelled industry and social stereotypes for
the Arab-American community. As the only festival in the
country that celebrates the humor of Arab-Americans,
NYAACF is popular not only among the Arab-American
community, but with American crowds as well.

This year's participants include Waleed Zuaiter (The
Public Theater's Mother Courage and Stuff Happens), Leila
Sbitani (Host of Nickelodeon's Hi-Jinks), from Los Angeles
comedian Aron Kader (Axis of Evil comedy tour), Hend Ayoub
(the new movie opening October 27 Death of an American
President aka "D.O.A.P"), Festival co-founders Dean
Obeidallah, a comedian who received rave reviews for his
one man show I Come in Peace which premiered at the 2006
NY Fringe Festival and co-producer/co-star of Comedy
Central's The Watch List, and Maysoon Zayid, comedian and
actress, who has been featured on NBC's Nightly News, MTV,
and As the World Turns.

This year's Festival promises to continue the tradition of
edgy and entertaining comedy that has earned the NYAACF

Not the Full Picture: Israel’s Media Censorship

Israel's war with Lebanon, and its ongoing invasion of Palestine, have been fought not only on the ground and air with weapons, but also on the airwaves and the internet - as supporters of Israel engage in new types of 'cyber-warfare' online, and the Israeli government engages in unprecedented censorship of media and use of cell phone messaging to inform potential targets to evacuate.

"There's been a war going on for Palestine at some level for the last 100 years and as technology changed from telephone and faxes to email and the Internet, ... those have been appropriated into the battle for public opinion. Because in the end, this is not going to be decided by who the superpower is or how many weapons Israel has and the balance of power in the region. It will be decided by public opinion, as was South Africa."

EI co-founder Nigel Parry spoke with Free Speech Radio News on August 15th about how communications technology plays a role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Jenka Soderberg reports.

ELECTRONIC LEBANON PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (Broadband Video)
Multimedia/PSA, Electronic Lebanon, 9 August 2006

In the weeks after Israel launched its attack on Lebanon,
a team of New York-based artists, designers, and multimedia
producers, Lebanese, Palestinian and internationals converged
on a warehouse location in Brooklyn to create a Public Service
Announcement for Electronic Lebanon. The two minute PSA is
intended for wide distribution and public viewing. A laptop version
of the PSA, for projection, is also available for immediate download.

Directed by Walid Zuaiter and featuring additional animation
from George Cox, Palestinian poet Suheir Hammad, and more.

Nigel Parry contributed to the concept, and worked on research, script
and image collection.

Key items on Electronic Lebanon to forward

As many of you know, I've been spending the last 5 weeks working
first on the Israeli invasion of Gaza and, as of July 12th, the Israeli
attack and invasion of Lebanon. Below, you will find some of the key
articles and resources we've published relating to the Lebanon crisis.

By this stage, close to 1,000 Lebanese have died, almost all of which
are civilians. Every bridge in the country has been bombed. All the
airports have been bombed. A massive oil spill following Israel's
targeting of fuel tanks on the coast has reached Syria. Cellphone
towers, hospitals, ambulances, power stations, UN observers, all
targeted. Entire villages in the south of the country have been
leafleted by Israel, warning them to flee, then the convoys of fleeing
people have been attacked. Whole families have been wiped out.

All of this has taken place in front of an approving or silent world. As
I wrote in a recent letter to British PM, an Arab friend of mine recently
commented, "Now I understand how the Holocaust could have happened".

Then there is Gaza, that has seen a similar destruction of its infrastructure.
These are dark days and this conflict, particularly given the international
approval given to Israel, guarantees global insecurity for decades.

Below are some Lebanon resources worth forwarding. The first video,
in particular, is truly a "must see". There is no graphic content, merely
people talking, but you'll understand why it's a must see pretty quickly.

Letter to Tony Blair #2

Dear Mr. Blair,

Watching you standing next to President Bush and talking about the need for a UN resolution, on what you described -- with a squid-like squirt of passive tense -- as the Lebanese "tragedy", makes me want to cry.

An Arab friend, watching leaders such as yourself do nothing as Israel spent an entire month massacring Palestinian and Lebanese civilians in the name of "fighting terrorism", recently told me the following:

"I understand now how the Holocaust could have happened."

A UN resolution is President Bush's clever device to buy Israel time to finish destroying two countries. Perhaps you and he can go and collect it, like Olympic medal winners, on top of the podium of dead bodies you have both helped Israel to build.

There are no words to adequately describe what you have failed to do, although Edmund Burke gets close: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

What you have undoubtedly achieved is the guarantee of global insecurity for decades to come.
