As you know, ElectronicIraq.net is home to the Direct Aid Initiative, a grassroots relief effort that provides funds for crucial medical care for Iraqis displaced by war and chaos. We want to take this opportunity to share with you an exciting new opportunity to include the work of the Direct Aid Initiative in your holiday giving. David Smith-Ferri, a gifted poet and longtime activist who has been visiting Iraq since 1999, has generously offered all of the after-printing proceeds from the new edition of his book, "Battlefield without Borders: Iraq Poems", to benefit the medical needs of Iraqi families through the Direct Aid Initiative. $12 of the $14 book price goes directly to this ongoing effort. Recently his car was shot at in front of his house, and he has now decided to leave the country - and his job as a leading oncologist in Baghdad. 'I love my country and would like to stay to help my people but. TRIBES SABOTAGE KIRKUK PIPELINES Masked men infiltrate the village of al-Milih, 75 kilometers west of Kirkuk, and approach an oil pipeline that passes nearby. Under cover of darkness, they steal oil from an opening they drilled into the pipeline weeks earlier. Over a period of weeks, this scene is repeated nightly. Women's Rights Activists Targeted | Doctors on Strike | Refugee Stories

However, she acknowledged that for a woman activist the risks of doing humanitarian work were increasing daily. <a href="http://electroniciraq.net/news/newsanalysis/">http://electroniciraq.net/news/newsanalysis/</a> :: AID & DEVELOPMENT:: BASRA DOCTORS STRIKE, DEMAND PROTECTION Nearly 150 doctors in Basra, Iraq's second largest city about 600km south of Baghdad, began a three-day strike on 23 July, demanding the government protect them and their families. According to figures from the Iraqi Health Ministry released earlier this year, 618 medical employees, including 132 doctors, as well as medics and other health care workers, have been killed nationwide since 2003. IRAQI REFUGEE VOICES: STORIES OF DESPERATION AND NEED Every morning at 8:00 am, Suha departs for her job at a small cafe in Amman, Jordan, leaving her seven-year-old son, Yasir, locked inside of their two-room apartment, alone. Suha and her son fled Iraq and came to Jordan with no friends, family, or resources. Suha works illegally, earning only US$140 a month, and acknowledges it's a struggle to meet their basic needs: 'My salary barely pays for our rent and food alone. How can I ever pay to send my son to school?' :: NEWS & ANALYSIS :: LIVING IN A DEAD CITY Life in the violence-plagued capital city of Iraq's Diyala province has become a struggle for day-to-day survival. Heavy U.S military operations, sectarian death squads and al-Qaeda militants have combined to make normal life in Baquba, 50 km northeast of Baghdad, all but impossible. Movement from the city to another destination is extremely dangerous. Kidnappings have become rampant in a lawless city where government control is only a mirage. SHIA AND SUNNI MPS FEAR AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL An American withdrawal from Iraq would cause bloodshed and leave the country dominated by radical militias, Iraqi politicians from across the parliamentary spectrum have warned. Even Sunni Arab leaders - who in the past have advocated an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of foreign troops - are among those now supporting the US troop presence and a gradual pullout over time. Many Sunni leaders say the withdrawal should be conditional on the progress of the Iraqi security forces. AUTHORITIES PLAN TO ISSUE SPECIAL IDS TO BAGHDAD RESIDENTS In a bid to reduce sectarian violence, the Iraqi authorities have decided to issue special IDs to Baghdad residents to make it easy to identify militants, a senior military officer said. He did not specify when the authorities would issue these new IDs, which would bear a person's full name and address. GRIM TATTOO SUBCULTURE EMERGES AMID DAILY VIOLENCE One response to sudden and violent death which has become commonplace in Iraq's turmoil, is the emergence of a new subculture - the etching of tattoo identities on people who fear becoming an unclaimed body in a packed morgue. It is more than just another grim footnote in a nation brimming with sad stories. "We didn't have a choice," said Muhammad Bilal, 43, who lives in a makeshift camp on the outskirts of Al Hillah, the capital of Babil province in central Iraq. TOUGH TIMES FOR ARAB REFUGEE KIDS IN IRAQI KURDISTAN As the violence has exploded in Iraq, the Iraqi Red Crescent says at least 4,500 Arab families have fled to the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, which was seen as one of the most mono-ethnic cities in Iraqi Kurdistan. URGENT APPEAL for woman injured by mortar

Dear ElectronicIraq.net subscribers, The Electronic Iraq Direct Aid Initiative needs your support. More specifically, Buthaina Muhammad needs your support. She was injured last month when a mortar, fired by an unknown group, landed on her house and exploded, killing three woman inside. Buthaina survived and has been flown to Amman, Jordan for treatment. She is in urgent need of a surgery to repair an abdominal wound. The wound is at risk of infection. An infection could kill her. Her hospital treatment is costing between $700 and $1000 per day (just for the drugs and maintenance). The operation will cost between $15,000 and $18,000.
