		 <title>How You Can Help Displaced Iraqis</title>
		 <link>http://lists.electronicintifada.net/mail.cgi/archive/eIraq/20071127164648/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
As you know, ElectronicIraq.net is home to the Direct Aid Initiative, a&#60;br /&#62;
grassroots relief effort that provides funds for crucial medical care&#60;br /&#62;
for Iraqis displaced by war and chaos.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
We want to take this opportunity to share with you an exciting new&#60;br /&#62;
opportunity to include the work of the Direct Aid Initiative in your&#60;br /&#62;
holiday giving.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
David Smith-Ferri, a gifted poet and longtime activist who has been&#60;br /&#62;
visiting Iraq since 1999, has generously offered all of the&#60;br /&#62;
after-printing proceeds from the new edition of his book, &#38;quot;Battlefield&#60;br /&#62;
without Borders: Iraq Poems&#38;quot;, to benefit the medical needs of Iraqi&#60;br /&#62;
families through the Direct Aid Initiative.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
$12 of the $14 book price goes directly to this ongoing effort.&#60;br /&#62;
&#38;quot;Battlefield without Borders&#38;quot; is a book of poems that grew out of&#60;br /&#62;
David's encounters with Iraqi people during the last eight years. Many&#60;br /&#62;
of the poems were written in Iraq and in Jordan, and some of them&#60;br /&#62;
feature people that DAI is supporting.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
You can read some of David's poems and purchase the book online at&#60;br /&#62;

HOSPITALS UNDER PRESSURE AS DOCTORS MOVE ABROAD&#60;br /&#62;
Dr. Muhammad Abdel-Sattar, 36, is packing his bags as he&#60;br /&#62;
discusses on the phone with two colleagues the best time&#60;br /&#62;
to leave for the airport. In December 2006 Abdel-Sattar&#60;br /&#62;
sent his family to Jordan after three times receiving&#60;br /&#62;
threats from militants. Recently his car was shot at in&#60;br /&#62;
front of his house, and he has now decided to leave the&#60;br /&#62;
country - and his job as a leading oncologist in Baghdad.&#60;br /&#62;
'I love my country and would like to stay to help my&#60;br /&#62;
people but. I'm scared that any time a militant will come&#60;br /&#62;
and shoot me dead,' Abdel-Sattar says.&#60;br /&#62;

VIOLENCE, POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT FUEL RISING ALCOHOLISM&#60;br /&#62;
As the violence continues in Iraq, many people have been&#60;br /&#62;
turning to alcohol to relieve their stress, say observers.&#60;br /&#62;
'Violence, unemployment and poverty are the main reasons&#60;br /&#62;
for the increase in alcohol abuse,' said Younis Obeidi, a&#60;br /&#62;
psychiatrist at Ibn Rushd Hospital. 'In Iraq there are no&#60;br /&#62;
specialized programs for alcoholics. The two&#60;br /&#62;
non-governmental organizations which were helping&#60;br /&#62;
alcoholics closed down after receiving threats from&#60;br /&#62;
militants.'&#60;br /&#62;

TRIBES SABOTAGE KIRKUK PIPELINES&#60;br /&#62;
Masked men infiltrate the village of al-Milih, 75&#60;br /&#62;
kilometers west of Kirkuk, and approach an oil pipeline&#60;br /&#62;
that passes nearby. Under cover of darkness, they steal&#60;br /&#62;
oil from an opening they drilled into the pipeline weeks&#60;br /&#62;
earlier. Over a period of weeks, this scene is repeated&#60;br /&#62;
nightly. Despite the presence of special oil ministry&#60;br /&#62;
units, pipelines around Kirkuk are destroyed and hundreds&#60;br /&#62;
of tons of oil stolen every day by tribe members from&#60;br /&#62;
surrounding villages. &#60;br /&#62;

CLASSROOM CHAOS &#60;br /&#62;
Iraqi children are desperate to study after the isolation&#60;br /&#62;
of the Saddam years, but a special report by the Institute&#60;br /&#62;
of War and Peace Reporting shows that violence, poverty&#60;br /&#62;
and prejudice threaten to condemn their generation to&#60;br /&#62;
ignorance.&#60;br /&#62;

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SUPPLIES REQUESTED AFTER LATEST BOMB&#60;br /&#62;
BLASTS&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Doctors in hospitals treating victims of the latest bomb&#60;br /&#62;
blasts have asked for medical supplies to be delivered&#60;br /&#62;
urgently. 'We need all kinds of emergency materials but&#60;br /&#62;
especially plasters, cotton wool and painkillers to help&#60;br /&#62;
victims who have lost limbs or have serious cuts,' said Dr&#60;br /&#62;
Dirar Muhammad, who has been working overtime at Dahuk&#60;br /&#62;
hospital. &#60;br /&#62;

SAVING DARBAND VILLAGE&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
High in the mountains of northern Iraq a deadly legacy of&#60;br /&#62;
the Iran/Iraq war hides amongst the wild flowers and long&#60;br /&#62;
grass, ready to strike any unsuspecting victim. The spiky&#60;br /&#62;
crowns of the deadly Valmara land mines are hard to see,&#60;br /&#62;
but the slightest movement of one of the sensitive spikes&#60;br /&#62;
could result in death for any person or animal within 30&#60;br /&#62;
meters. &#60;br /&#62;

THE PRISONER OF THREE PRISONS&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Electronic Iraq Amman correspondent Noah Baker Merrill&#60;br /&#62;
profiles an Iraqi man stuck in a Jordanian prison while he&#60;br /&#62;
waits for the UN to resettle him. 'Iraqis here in Jordan&#60;br /&#62;
describe Iraq as a prison where hope cannot enter,' writes&#60;br /&#62;
Merrill. 'They speak of Jordan as another kind of prison&#60;br /&#62;
where they hope and pray to leave these years of living in&#60;br /&#62;
limbo behind them. Saad knows the inside of each of these&#60;br /&#62;
prisons well. And he knows this third kind of prison,&#60;br /&#62;
Juweideh Prison, even better.'&#60;br /&#62;

CONFLICT JEOPARDIZING CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL, MENTAL HEALTH&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Muhammad Abdallah, 12, lost his only brother in a shooting&#60;br /&#62;
incident, and since then his parents are not taking any&#60;br /&#62;
chances and do not let him out of the house. 'In the past&#60;br /&#62;
two years I've been more or less confined to my room. My&#60;br /&#62;
parents don't allow me to go out, most of my friends have&#60;br /&#62;

VIOLENCE TAKING TOLL ON PREGNANT MOTHERS, INFANTS&#60;br /&#62;
According to doctors, dozens of women in Iraq each day&#60;br /&#62;
face delivery difficulties caused by violence and the&#60;br /&#62;
curfew that is preventing access to health care during the&#60;br /&#62;
night. 'For at least two women in every 12 who seek&#60;br /&#62;
emergency delivery assistance here, either the mother or&#60;br /&#62;
her child dies,' said Dr. Ibrahim Khalil, a gynecologist at&#60;br /&#62;
Al-Karada maternity hospital.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Escalation by the Numbers | Kathy Kelly Op-Ed | Educating Iraqi Kids in Jordan</title>

ESCALATION BY THE NUMBERS - BY TOM ENGELHARDT&#60;br /&#62;
Admittedly, a 'surge' does sound more comforting, less&#60;br /&#62;
aggressive, less long-lasting, and somehow less harmful&#60;br /&#62;
than an 'escalation,' but the fact is that we are six&#60;br /&#62;
months into the newest escalation of American power in&#60;br /&#62;
Iraq.  It has deposited all-time high numbers of troops&#60;br /&#62;
there as well, undoubtedly, as more planes and firepower&#60;br /&#62;
in and around that country than at any moment since the&#60;br /&#62;
invasion of 2003.  Naturally enough, other 'all-time&#60;br /&#62;
highs' of the grimmest sort follow.&#60;br /&#62;

GET TO WORK! - BY KATHY KELLY&#60;br /&#62;
Activist Kathy Kelly tells the story of two women who saw&#60;br /&#62;
their lives spin out of control after taking jobs with the&#60;br /&#62;
U.S. military. 'Some argue we're not 100% responsible for&#60;br /&#62;
this aftermath,' Kelly writes. 'Is it 90%? Are we 80%?&#60;br /&#62;
70%? What percent of Noor's blindness, of Nadra's status&#60;br /&#62;
as the mark of death on any family who houses her - what&#60;br /&#62;
percent of that can we be comfortable with?'&#60;br /&#62;

IRAQI CHILDREN GRANTED ACCESS TO EDUCATION, ANNOUNCES&#60;br /&#62;
GOVERNMENT OF JORDAN&#60;br /&#62;
Some 200,000 school age Iraqi children could benefit from&#60;br /&#62;
a recent announcement by the Government of Jordan that&#60;br /&#62;
they will now allow Iraqi children to enrol and attend&#60;br /&#62;
both public and private schools in the country. This&#60;br /&#62;
decision was made in response to the mounting needs of&#60;br /&#62;
Iraqi children, some of whom have not attended school for&#60;br /&#62;
years.&#60;br /&#62;

WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVISTS INCREASINGLY TARGETED BY&#60;br /&#62;
MILITANTS&#60;br /&#62;
Haifaa Nour, president of the Women's Freedom&#60;br /&#62;
Organization, one of the few women's rights organizations&#60;br /&#62;
in Iraq, said threatening she has been receiving letters&#60;br /&#62;
will not deter her from her job, even if it cost her her&#60;br /&#62;
life. However, she acknowledged that for a woman activist&#60;br /&#62;
the risks of doing humanitarian work were increasing&#60;br /&#62;
daily.&#60;br /&#62;

BASRA DOCTORS STRIKE, DEMAND PROTECTION&#60;br /&#62;
Nearly 150 doctors in Basra, Iraq's second largest city&#60;br /&#62;
about 600km south of Baghdad, began a three-day strike on&#60;br /&#62;
23 July, demanding the government protect them and their&#60;br /&#62;
families. According to figures from the Iraqi Health&#60;br /&#62;
Ministry released earlier this year, 618 medical&#60;br /&#62;
employees, including 132 doctors, as well as medics and&#60;br /&#62;
other health care workers, have been killed nationwide&#60;br /&#62;
since 2003.&#60;br /&#62;

IRAQI REFUGEE VOICES: STORIES OF DESPERATION &#60;br /&#62;
AND NEED&#60;br /&#62;
Every morning at 8:00 am, Suha departs for her job at a&#60;br /&#62;
small cafe in Amman, Jordan, leaving her seven-year-old&#60;br /&#62;
son, Yasir, locked inside of their two-room apartment,&#60;br /&#62;
alone. Suha and her son fled Iraq and came to Jordan with&#60;br /&#62;
no friends, family, or resources. Suha works illegally,&#60;br /&#62;
earning only US$140 a month, and acknowledges it's a&#60;br /&#62;
struggle to meet their basic needs: 'My salary barely pays&#60;br /&#62;
for our rent and food alone. How can I ever pay to send my&#60;br /&#62;
son to school?' Read more from a collection of refugee&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;br /&#62;
:: NEWS &#38;amp; ANALYSIS ::&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
LIVING IN A DEAD CITY&#60;br /&#62;
Life in the violence-plagued capital city of Iraq's Diyala&#60;br /&#62;
province has become a struggle for day-to-day survival.&#60;br /&#62;
Heavy U.S military operations, sectarian death squads and&#60;br /&#62;
al-Qaeda militants have combined to make normal life in&#60;br /&#62;
Baquba, 50 km northeast of Baghdad, all but impossible.&#60;br /&#62;
Movement from the city to another destination is extremely&#60;br /&#62;
dangerous. Kidnappings have become rampant in a lawless&#60;br /&#62;
city where government control is only a mirage.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
SHIA AND SUNNI MPS FEAR AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL&#60;br /&#62;
An American withdrawal from Iraq would cause bloodshed and&#60;br /&#62;
leave the country dominated by radical militias, Iraqi&#60;br /&#62;
politicians from across the parliamentary spectrum have&#60;br /&#62;
warned. Even Sunni Arab leaders - who in the past have&#60;br /&#62;
advocated an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of&#60;br /&#62;
foreign troops - are among those now supporting the US&#60;br /&#62;
troop presence and a gradual pullout over time. Many Sunni&#60;br /&#62;
leaders say the withdrawal should be conditional on the&#60;br /&#62;
progress of the Iraqi security forces.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
AUTHORITIES PLAN TO ISSUE SPECIAL IDS TO BAGHDAD RESIDENTS&#60;br /&#62;
In a bid to reduce sectarian violence, the Iraqi&#60;br /&#62;
authorities have decided to issue special IDs to Baghdad&#60;br /&#62;
residents to make it easy to identify militants, a senior&#60;br /&#62;
military officer said. He did not specify when the&#60;br /&#62;
authorities would issue these new IDs, which would bear a&#60;br /&#62;
person's full name and address.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
GRIM TATTOO SUBCULTURE EMERGES AMID DAILY VIOLENCE&#60;br /&#62;
One response to sudden and violent death which has become&#60;br /&#62;
commonplace in Iraq's turmoil, is the emergence of a new&#60;br /&#62;
subculture - the etching of tattoo identities on people&#60;br /&#62;
who fear becoming an unclaimed body in a packed morgue. It&#60;br /&#62;
is more than just another grim footnote in a nation&#60;br /&#62;
brimming with sad stories. It points to how deeply war and&#60;br /&#62;
sectarian bloodshed have transformed the way Iraqis live&#60;br /&#62;
today and confront the constant possibility of death.&#60;br /&#62;

THOUSANDS OF STORIES TO TELL&#60;br /&#62;
Having spent a fair amount of time in occupied Iraq, I now&#60;br /&#62;
find living in the United States nothing short of a&#60;br /&#62;
schizophrenic experience. Life in Iraq was traumatizing.&#60;br /&#62;
It was impossible to be there and not be affected by&#60;br /&#62;
apocalyptic levels of violence and suffering, unimaginable&#60;br /&#62;
in this country. But here's the weird thing:  One long,&#60;br /&#62;
comfortable plane ride later and you're in Disneyland, or&#60;br /&#62;
so it feels on returning to the United States.&#60;br /&#62;

FAMILIES FLEEING VIOLENCE SET UP IMPROVISED CAMPS&#60;br /&#62;
Thousands of Iraqis have been setting up their own&#60;br /&#62;
improvised displacement camps after fleeing violence in&#60;br /&#62;
their home areas and being turned away from already&#60;br /&#62;
overcrowded formal camps. &#38;quot;We didn't have a choice,&#38;quot; said&#60;br /&#62;
Muhammad Bilal, 43, who lives in a makeshift camp on the&#60;br /&#62;
outskirts of Al Hillah, the capital of Babil province in&#60;br /&#62;
central Iraq.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
TOUGH TIMES FOR ARAB REFUGEE KIDS IN IRAQI KURDISTAN&#60;br /&#62;
As the violence has exploded in Iraq, the Iraqi Red&#60;br /&#62;
Crescent says at least 4,500 Arab families have fled to&#60;br /&#62;
the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, which was seen as one of&#60;br /&#62;
the most mono-ethnic cities in Iraqi Kurdistan. While they&#60;br /&#62;
are now neighbors, Arab and Kurdish children aren't&#60;br /&#62;
mixing.&#60;br /&#62;

THE ART OF KAREEM RISAN AND THE URANIUM CIVILIZATION&#60;br /&#62;
Characterized by two coinciding histories since its first&#60;br /&#62;
cities were founded six thousand years ago, Iraq has&#60;br /&#62;
experienced both the pinnacles of world civilization and&#60;br /&#62;
large scale destruction at different times in its history.&#60;br /&#62;
Subjected to unyielding violence and ruin, Iraq currently&#60;br /&#62;
has the world's attention. Yet its rich cultural narrative&#60;br /&#62;
continues in the work of its artists. Conscious of their&#60;br /&#62;
complex history, contemporary Iraqi artists employ a&#60;br /&#62;
diverse visual culture that utilizes and projects its&#60;br /&#62;
multiple identities.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>URGENT APPEAL for woman injured by mortar</title>
		 <link>http://lists.electronicintifada.net/mail.cgi/archive/eIraq/20070717061841/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;Dear ElectronicIraq.net subscribers,&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Electronic Iraq Direct Aid Initiative needs your support. More&#60;br /&#62;
specifically, Buthaina Muhammad needs your support. She&#60;br /&#62;
was injured last month when a mortar, fired by an unknown&#60;br /&#62;
group, landed on her house and exploded, killing three&#60;br /&#62;
woman inside.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Buthaina survived and has been flown to Amman, Jordan for&#60;br /&#62;
treatment. She is in urgent need of a surgery to repair an&#60;br /&#62;
abdominal wound. The wound is at risk of infection. An&#60;br /&#62;
infection could kill her.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Her hospital treatment is costing between $700 and $1000&#60;br /&#62;
per day (just for the drugs and maintenance). The&#60;br /&#62;
operation will cost between $15,000 and $18,000.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
The Direct Aid Initiative is a project of Electronic Iraq&#60;br /&#62;
intended to support Iraqis displaced as the result of the&#60;br /&#62;
ongoing Iraqi crises through providing funds for crucial&#60;br /&#62;
medical expenses.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
If you are able to help, please contact Direct Aid&#60;br /&#62;
Initiative Coordinator Noah Merrill, who is in Amman now.&#60;br /&#62;
